The dangers of inaccurate insurance cover are self evident. Over insurance will mean you pay too much for your premium that in the event of loss will pay out only the value of the lost item on the date of the claim.
Under insurance will result in a settlement that will not allow the item to be replaced like for like.
Also never be tempted to underinsure an item you know is worth more. If your insurer suspects this they will dismiss your claim.
Always make sure your insurance cover is accurate. Having your valuation updated every two years will ensure this.
Any valuations carried out by myself entitle you to a reduced revaluation fee of just €30.
When cleaning your diamond jewellery
ultrasonic cleaners are probably overkill for most people (and should not be used if you’re not 100% sure what you’re doing).
Good results can be achieved using hot water with a little household detergent and a soft toothbrush. Always try and use a glass bowl because if something does fall out it will make it easier to find. Rinse items in another bowl of clean water NEVER under a running tap. Allow the item to dry on some tissue (don’t rub it with the tissue) and buff it with a soft lint free cloth or a soft chamois leather. There is a brand of cloth called Selvt which is ideal for this.
Isopropyl alcohol which can be bought at any chemist is great for cleaning diamonds. But avoid using it on emeralds and any porous or treated stones.

Keeping your jewellery secure is something that must be considered. Depending on the value of the items your insurance may insist on minimum levels of security such as having a safe installed.
Its impossible to keep items 100% secure. However the harder you make it for a burglar, who will only have a few minutes in your home to carry out a robbery, the more you reduce your potential loss. Make sure nothing is in plain view. A good hint is to buy some cheap gold plated chains and leave them in a jewellery box. With any luck the burglar wont have time to check and will just grab whats ‘shiny’.
